Roosters don't mate the way most people assume, and their anatomy makes the process surprisingly unlike any other common farm animal. Roosters fluff their feathers, preen, and bob their heads to show off their combs and wattles. When a rooster has chosen a hen, he will do a little dance around her to show her that he is interested, often raising and lowering one wing to the ground as he dances in a circle. Sometimes he will be rejected several times before he finds an interested female. Once he has begun courting, he will continue until she accepts him.

Chicken reproduction is a competitive process. Hens will only mate when they are good and ready, regardless of the amount of dancing and noise from the roosters. If a hen is ready, she will go into a squatting position to signal to the rooster that she is submissive, holding out her wings slightly with her head and body closer to the ground.

Anatomy and Mechanism of Mating

A rooster does not have a penis; instead, chickens have a small bump called a papilla inside the cloaca. Therefore, the rooster cannot penetrate the hen, and the mating involves a cloacal kiss. The rooster must align their cloacas so germinal contact occurs. The female leans forward while the male leans backward; when their cloacae touch, the rooster delivers his sperm to the hen's cloaca, which has turned outward to receive it. This whole process normally takes less than 30 seconds.

One rooster can mate 10 to 30 times per day, depending on how many hens are available and how many other roosters are around. After mating, the sperm can remain viable for 10 to 14 days, though fresh sperm is best. The DNA from the rooster reaches the germinal disc and fuses to form a fertilized egg, or zygote, after which cell division begins in about 5 hours, creating an embryo or blastoderm. The fertilized egg then proceeds through the stages needed to become an egg.

Ovary, Oviduct, and Fertilization Process

A hen is born with two ovaries, but the right typically atrophies and dies, so the left ovary carries all the eggs she will lay. The ovary contains multiple egg follicles, including the ripening egg. When the egg is ready, it is released into the infundibulum of the oviduct, where it begins its descent. The oviduct measures about 25 to 27 inches in length, and the sperm travels roughly 24 to 26 inches to reach the infundibulum. Fertilization occurs when the rooster's sperm meets the ovum in the infundibulum. The fertilized egg then continues along the oviduct as it forms its layers and protective coverings before being laid as an egg or developing into a chick if incubated.

Incubation, Laying, and Brooding

After mating, it can take between 27 hours and seven days for the first fertilized egg to be laid. The egg leaves the hen via the vent. A hen lays one egg per day until she has about 12, known as a clutch. In the wild, if eggs are taken away daily, she will continue laying to reach 12; however, modern domestic hens are bred for continuous laying and may not follow this pattern. Once she has laid an egg, the embryo cools down, suspending its development, but as long as the nest remains warm, the embryo can survive up to two weeks until a full clutch is laid. After the clutch is complete, she may begin brooding, sitting on the eggs for about three weeks to develop the embryos. If she is not broody, she will not sit on the eggs long enough.

Eggs can be laid whether fertilized or not. Only fertilized eggs will result in chicks if incubated. If a hen is interested in being a mother, she will nest in a dark and quiet place and store her eggs until she has enough to incubate. A hen will lay one egg per day until she has 12, forming a clutch, and her brood becomes their protective environment once the eggs are set for incubation.
