Begin by opening your recipe card template. When Gimp is up and running on your computer, click FILE {in the upper left corner} and then click OPEN. A window will pop up that allows you to navigate your own computer to find the image you want and click OPEN.
Click within the image, roughly where you would like the text to appear. The GIMP Text Editor will pop up. Enter your text into the text editor. As you type, the image will be updated with your text using the current style. Don’t worry if it’s not in the style you want, you can change the style later on. Once you’ve written your text, feel free to close the GIMP Text Editor.
When you add text in GIMP, a new layer is added automatically. This is quite handy, as it gives you the ability to manipulate the text without affecting other parts of the image. As mentioned previously, this is one of the main benefits of layers. Once you’ve added your text, you can then manipulate it as required.
For example, you can change the font family, change the size, color, etc. Make sure you still have the Text tool selected (on the main toolbox), and that the correct layer is currently selected/highlighted. Select Dialogs > Tool Options to open the Tool Options dialog (if it’s not open already). Change the font as required. To do this, click on the Aa button and select a font from the list.
A common mistake by beginners is that they forget to do step 1. They forget to select the Text tool (from the main toolbox). So, if you have trouble getting the text properties to display, this could be the reason. You typed some text in GIMP, moved on, and now you need to change it. Maybe the font is wrong, the color is off, or you just made a typo. GIMP keeps text layers as editable vector-style objects until you flatten them.
In the Layers panel, click the text layer you want to edit. Click directly on the text in the canvas. If clicking on the canvas does not work, double-click the "T" icon next to the layer name in the Layers panel. Press Enter to add a new line inside the text box. Change the size - Edit the size field in Tool Options. Change the color - Click the color swatch in Tool Options. The Color Chooser will open. Changes apply only to selected text. If you want to change the entire layer at once, select all with Ctrl+A first.
Need more font options? If the text has been flattened, rasterized, or merged with other layers, it is no longer editable as text - it is just pixels. Undo - Press Ctrl+Z repeatedly until the text layer is restored. Work in XCF format - GIMP's native .xcf format preserves all layers including text layers. If you saved as JPEG or PNG, the text was baked in. One common frustration: clicking on the canvas with the Text tool sometimes creates a new text layer instead of selecting an existing one.
Tips for Efficient Text Work in GIMP
- Use separate text boxes for different blocks of text to keep edits isolated.
- Always check the active layer before making changes to text.
- Save regularly in .xcf to preserve editability of text layers.
A few practical steps to add and refine text quickly:
- Open your image with FILE > OPEN.
- Click within the image where you want text and the GIMP Text Editor appears.
- Type your text and close the editor if you’re done for the moment.
- Use the Text Tool in the toolbox to adjust font, size, and color in Tool Options.
- Ensure the correct text layer is selected in the Layers panel before edits.
- To edit the text later, double-click the “T” icon on the layer or click the text on the canvas.
If the text has been merged with other layers or rasterized, it cannot be edited as text anymore. In that case, you would need to revert to a prior version saved in .xcf format or recreate the text on a new layer. Remember, you can always undo actions with Ctrl+Z to revert changes and try again.
