“Outstanding application! There are a number of things to consider when you want to create your own logo, such as Use of color, typefaces used and even a general shape or layout of the logo. We want something that will be recognizable and have bold colors. Our logo is for a real estate company named, Homes for Sale.”
We will start with a new document and because we are creating a logo, at this point, page size is not really important. It is a vector file that we are creating and so it can be resized at anytime, to the desired size. From the New Document dialog box (File > New), set the preset destination to Default RGB.
The main element in this logo is the number “4”. Select the text tool from the toolbox. Left click on the page and type the number “4”. From the Interactive Property bar, change the font to Arial MT Black 1000 pt. We will also type the text “SALE” and set it to Arial MT Black 260 pt. In order to remove the center opening in the “4”, select the text with the text tool and goto (Object>Convert to Curves or Ctrl+Q). Next we will need to break it apart. (Objects>Break Curve Apart or Ctrl+K). The centerpiece of the “4” will be behind the larger piece. Hold the Alt key down while clicking in the center area of the “4”. This will dig down and select the object behind. Delete it.
Typically when you create a logo, it should be done using spot colors. A spot color is a special premixed ink that is used instead of, or in addition to, process inks. Use a spot color when a few colors are required and color accuracy is important. In this logo we are using PANTONE 108C and PANTONE Black 6C. To change a color from RGB or CMYK to a spot color, with the object selected, double click on the fill swatch in the Status bar. In the Edit Fill dialog click on the Palettes tab and then select the Palette drop down list and locate Pantone Solid coated. This will automatically change the selected object to a spot fill.

Select the Ellipse tool. Hold down the Ctrl key, click and drag to draw a circle. On the property bar, change the Object Size fields to 3”. Select the Freehand tool. Click once to the left of the circle, press and hold the Ctrl key, then click to the right of the circle. This will create a horizontal line that cuts across the circle. Use the Pick tool to select the line, hold down the Shift key and select the circle also. Press the E key, then the C key. On the property bar, adjust the Duplicate Distance values to 0. Select the line with the Pick tool and press Ctrl + D to duplicate it. On the property bar, set the Angle of rotation to 12. Press Ctrl + D 13 more times to create the rest of the rays. The Smart Duplicate feature will automatically rotate each duplicate line by 12 degrees. Use the Smart Fill tool to fill alternate rays with yellow or your choice of color. Before filling, make sure the Fill Options are set to Specify and the Outline Options are set to No Outline (on the property bar).
Continue with the composition by selecting the Pick tool, holding Alt to marquee-select lower lines, and deleting them. Delete the original line also. Use the Pick tool to select the rectangle, hold Shift to select the rays. Create a second, smaller rectangle on top of the first one. Press Ctrl + D to duplicate the second rectangle. Switch to the Shape tool to create the fourth rectangle which will be the door, duplicating the top rectangle with rounded corners. Now your logo is complete. Need more help? We hope you found this tutorial helpful. See what’s new in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite! This in-depth tutorial will take you through the steps of creating a logo from scratch. Our simple logo design consists of a lighthouse on a sun rays background with the company name at the bottom. To begin, create a new CorelDRAW document. Since page size does not matter for this project, you can use the CorelDRAW Default preset. We will be working in inches, so in the New Document window, make sure the units of measure are set to inches. TIP: you can also change the units of measure at any time by double-clicking on the ruler at the top of the interface to open the Document Options window. TIP: When you activate a tool, look at the Status Bar along the bottom of the interface to see extra features of the tool.
To resize the circle to exactly 3”, use the Object Size fields in the Property Bar along the top. First, click on the Lock Ratio icon to maintain the aspect ratio of the circle. The ray pattern will be created by making duplicates of the line and rotating them. But before making any duplicates, you may need to adjust the Duplicate Distance from the default setting of 0.25”. In the Property Bar, change both the horizontal and vertical Duplicate Distance values to 0”.
Select the line with the Pick tool then press Ctrl + D to duplicate it. This new line will be the first rotated copy. Now we’ll take advantage of CorelDRAW’s Smart Duplicate feature, which creates additional copies that use the previous transformation, which is the 12-degree rotation in this case. On the Property Bar, set the Fill Options to Specify and select a sunny yellow in the Fill Color window. Click inside alternating triangular shapes inside the circle to create eight new yellow curves. Now that the rays are complete, we no longer need the lines. To select what to remove, go back to the Pick tool by tapping the Spacebar.
The next task for this logo to create is a lighthouse, which is comprised of four rectangles. Activate the Rectangle tool (shortcut key F6) and click and drag to create a rectangle, which will be the base of the lighthouse. Now we need to center the rectangle on the sun rays. The rectangle should already be selected, so activate the Pick tool, press and hold the Shift key and select the rays as well. We need three more rectangles to complete our lighthouse and using the snapping options will make it easier to be precise. Activate the Rectangle tool again. The third rectangle will become the light of the lighthouse. Now we are going to fill the rectangles with color. First, activate the Pick tool and select the bottom rectangle. Hold down the Shift key and select the middle rectangle as well. Then click on the white color swatch in the Color palette. In order to make the lighthouse look more realistic, we want to modify the shape of the top and bottom rectangle. Activate the Shape tool (shortcut F10) and you will see several nodes on the rectangle that can be edited. The bottom rectangle is to be tapered toward the top, so drag the top left node inward until you reach the intersection point. Select the top rectangle, which does not have to be converted to curves. The Property Bar has four Corner Radius fields that we can use to round the top corners. Make sure the lock icon is off so that all four corners don’t change together. The fourth and final rectangle will be the door of the lighthouse, based on the rounded rectangle that is our light at the top. The door should be longer vertically, let’s say 50% longer. The Scale factor settings can be found on the Property Bar. If we convert this shape to a curve (Ctrl + Q), the Scale factor values will reset to 100%. With the black rounded rectangle still selected, hold down the Shift key and select the bottom base rectangle, then press B to align bottoms. We’ve seen that left-clicking a swatch in the Color palette will fill an object with color. All that’s left to add is the company name “Lighthouse Energy” for this logo. To change the font, select the text then open the Font List on the Property Bar. You can scroll down and hover your mouse over the font names to preview what the text will look like. The last step is to adjust the size of the company name to make it the same width as the sun rays. To determine the width, activate the Pick tool and select the group of rays. Select the text with the Pick tool. NOTE: you can also resize the text simply by dragging the center right sizing handle to line it up to the right side of the rays.
Now that we’ve completed the logo, it’s time to save it. Creating a logo for your business can feel overwhelming. 1. What do you want everyone to know most about your business? That you’re trustworthy? That you’re professional? Maybe that you are a ton of fun to work with! It’s important to think about what is most important to convey because believe it or not, people will have preconceived notions about your business based on your logo. Think of it as a first impression. It conveys professionalism and innovation. It is effective and timeless. Its simplicity will allow it to be used effortlessly across various mediums. These are all benefits to this logo - let’s keep these in mind as we examine the elements of a memorable logo.
2. Remember to consider not only what your business provides, but your audience as well. You could be a non-profit that helps children, but your audience wouldn’t be children. Your audience would be adults who have an interest in the wellbeing of children. The colors in this example are playful and reminiscent of children. The wrapping arm clearly shows someone with more stability offering support and balance. Finally, the clear font expresses professionalism and trustworthiness. Who is your audience? Be sure to keep this separate from those you serve or who your clients are - they might be the same or they might be two completely different groups of people.
3. Did you realize that there are actually psychological influences behind different shapes and what they communicate to the mind? This can be a powerful tool in choosing a shape for your logo. The Olympic Rings are a world famous logo where the interlocking circles imply community and cooperation - perfect for the largest global sporting event.
4. Similar to shapes, colors also subconsciously communicate and unspoken message to your audience. Metallics like gold are powerful when done right but look cheap and terrible when not done well. Like most of what we’ve discussed so far, there is a lot more info out there that you can dive into. 5. Trends come and go and you do NOT want someone to look at your logo and think, “That is so 2016.” Be careful to avoid trendy designs, fonts, or colors. Vintage designs and watercolor are very trendy right now and should be used carefully if at all. Here are a couple of trendy logos and styles that are should not be emulated if you want your design to stand the test of time.
6. What makes your business different than the rest? Think of your product, your mission, and your company to stick with concepts that are uniquely yours. You can be original and still keep all other elements listed here in mind to keep your ideas in check. This logo is created to look like wine stains from the bottoms of glasses or bottles that are clustered together to form a bunch of grapes. The logo is a creative way to incorporate the act of drinking wine with the origin of the wine itself.
7. You will want to choose a timeless font, but you also want to stand out from the crowd - consider a custom font. Coca-Cola’s logo is a perfect example of this - it is simply their brand name in a custom font. 8. Consider the shape of your logo and how you want the eye of the viewer to move across the design. More symmetrical or balanced logos convey stability and trustworthiness. Logos that have curves or are weighted to pull the eye a particular direction imply energy and innovation. This bird is vertical, balanced, and does not imply movement. This bird is facing right, unbalanced, and suggests movement. 9. When you are designing your logo keep the variety of uses in mind. Instagram is a great example of a logo that is versatile and can be used in a number of situations. It looks great in both color and in black and white. 10. Keep your logo simple. Overcomplicating design can lead to confusion and negatively affect the other elements discussed. For example, a complex logo is likely less versatile and more likely to go out of style - this is a good rule of thumb but not a rule. Now that you have a couple key components in mind, explore the Internet for logos that communicate elements similar to your concepts. Jot down your list of components you think will be appropriate for you logo such as audience, shape, color, and movement and keep these in mind when you design. This guideline should be a great starting place and help keep you from getting overwhelmed. We recommend browsing the vast sea of logos after you’ve brainstormed the various elements above. Once you are ready, here are a couple places you can get started browsing logo examples. Even if you aren’t great at drawing, sketching ideas helps you visualize different elements in your design and will help you come up with a basic layout. It will also help you in organizing your thoughts. Try a few sketches, walk away from your work for a bit, and come back to them to see how you feel about your initial designs.
