Have you ever wanted to make text layers in Photoshop transparent and allow the background layer to show through? This guide walks you through a stylish cut-out approach that emphasizes background visibility while keeping typography readable.
Start by creating a new document in Photoshop and place an image to use as the background. Draw a white rectangle on the canvas, and set the Opacity to around 90%. Now add the text layer that we will be making transparent.
Set up the text for transparency
Double click on the group layer to edit the Blending Options. At the bottom of the Blending Options window, set the Blend If option to Gray and drag the left handle for This Layer to a value of at least 1. You now have a completely editable transparent text layer. When you are finished editing, I recommend converting the text layer to a shape and subtracting it from the rectangle layer to achieve a smoother, higher quality result. Right click on the text layer in the Layers panel and select Convert to Shape. Use the Path Selection tool to highlight the text and cut (CMD+X) and paste (CMD+V) it onto the rectangle layer.
Final adjustments and refinements

Need to add text to an image but the background is too busy? Instead of struggling to make standard text readable on a cluttered background, we’ll surround the text with a solid block of color, and make the letters themselves completely transparent. The process is simple. No AI tools are used for this effect. I'm using Photoshop 2026.
Start by opening the image. In the Layers panel, we see the image on the Background layer. Photoshop adds a new blank layer (Layer 1) above your image. Set the Contents to White in the Fill dialog box. Select your font in the Options Bar. Set the font size to 150 pt. Still in the Options Bar, make sure your type color is black (press D on your keyboard to quickly reset to default colors). Click inside the document and add your text. You’ll see the transform box and handles appear around your text. Drag any of the handles to resize your text. Click and drag inside the transform box to move your text into the perfect position over your background. In the Advanced Blending section, change the Knockout setting from None to Shallow. Right now, your text is still black. Click OK to close the Layer Style dialog box.
Let’s resize the white background so it doesn’t cover the entire photo. Before dragging the handles, check the Options Bar and unlink the Width (W) and Height (H) fields. Finally, adjust the Opacity of Layer 1 to fine-tune your effect. Increasing the opacity makes the white background more solid and the text easier to read, while decreasing it blends the frame further into the photo. The steps we just covered work perfectly when your image is on the Background layer. But what happens if your image is on a normal layer? Let’s test it out. Instantly, the transparent text effect breaks. Check your Layers panel to see both layers inside Group 1. And there we have it!
