How to Add a Brush in Pixlr

With Pixlr’s new brush feature, you can now customize any hand-drawn effects onto your edits. This cool element would mesmerize your target audience like no other as it lets your personality shine through. With Pixlr’s intuitive and user-friendly interface, you can create stunning brushwork in just a few clicks!

All you need to do is head over to the brush icon on the left vertical toolbar. Next, once you click the brush tool, you’ll be directed to the following mini toolbar which would indicate the brush elements you can control such as; Shape, Opacity and Flow. Even the softness and the smoothness level of your brush are within your grasp. With these many options, you are well on your way to master the basics of digital painting too.

When using the Brush tool, you can combine Hard Tip and Use Pen Pressure for a more solid and opaque brush stroke. You can customize any hand-drawn effects onto your edits to suit simple graphics or complex photo editing projects. There’s no limit to how far you can go in styling your visual content; be explorative and set no restrictions whatsoever.

Be explorative as you want and set no restrictions whatsoever. One of my favorite digital scrapbooking tools within Photoshop Elements is the Brush tool! Why? Because PSE brushes are the digital equivalent of rubber stamps, which makes them so versatile. Brushes are a special form of graphics - so they can be almost anything - decorative elements, scribbles, text, doodles, images, paint strokes, or splatters!

Brushes are simply graphics that are bundled together in an Adobe-specific file type called an “ABR” file. All brush file names will end with “.abr”. Photoshop Elements allows you to temporarily load brush sets or to install them so they are always available. The more brush sets you have, the more memory your computer will use each time you launch PSE. Depending on how you like to work and how often you use brushes, you may prefer one method over the other. Temporarily loading brushes keeps memory available for other tasks, while installing brush sets ensures they are always accessible.

To install brushes in Photoshop Elements, make a copy of the .abr file for the brush set you want to install. Then copy it into the Brushes folder as needed. If you’re using Pixlr, you can leverage similar workflows where brush customization is central to your edits and can significantly impact the final look of your artwork.

In Pixlr Express (web version), you may have used the history brush before. If you’re not, give it a look and see if it’s a tool you might want to use. The history brush acts like an undo brush; you always have an undo option to revert the last effect or border or overlay you’ve added, but the history brush lets you selectively remove parts of an effect. For example, you can paint away part of an effect and keep the rest, which adds a nuanced layer of control to your edits.

When using the history brush, it works essentially the same way on your phone or tablet. You can lay down a brushstroke and then selectively remove parts of it, providing a flexible approach to editing. This tool is particularly useful for detailed editing on smaller screens where precise control matters.

  1. Open Pixlr and locate the Brush icon on the left toolbar to access the brush mini toolbar.
  2. Choose a brush shape, adjust Opacity and Flow, and set softness/smoothness to fit your style.
  3. Experiment by combining Hard Tip with Pen Pressure for more solid strokes and vary the brush settings to achieve the desired effect.
  4. Use the history brush if you want to selectively revert or modify parts of applied brush effects.

With these steps, you can add personal flair to both simple graphics and intricate photo edits, leveraging Pixlr’s brush feature to its fullest potential. The key is to explore the different brush elements and practice combining settings to craft unique hand-drawn textures.
